His brothers are also noted jazz musicians: Joe, a drummer, and John, an arranger and composer. LaBarbera’s other teachers included Joe Viola, Don Menza, and Joe Allard (saxophone), Joe Henderson, Lee Konitz, and Warne Marsh (improvisation), and Bernie Piltch (flute). As he puts it, “too many shows and acts to count or name”. He also has played on numerous jingles and film scores. He is a first rate woodwind doubler which has continued to place him in demand with Toronto based bands and has recently been playing in the John MacLeod, Rex Jazz Orchestra in downtown Toronto.
